Provider Identity Stack

A compact product model for separating provider identifier, specialty/category, and payer enrollment checks.

The Stack

Layer Meaning It Answers It Does Not Prove
NPI Unique 10-digit provider identifier used in HIPAA standard transactions. Which provider identity is being referenced? Specialty, location, payer enrollment, or permission to bill.
TAX NUCC taxonomy code: a 10-character specialty/category code. What kind of provider specialty/category is being represented? Which service was performed or whether licensure was met.
ENR Payer enrollment, credentialing, contract, and payer setup facts. Will this payer accept this provider for this role, address, TIN, taxonomy, and service context? A universal rule across payers.

Validation Flow

1. Identify

Confirm the correct NPI for the claim role: billing, rendering, referring, ordering, supervising, or service facility.

2. Classify

Confirm the taxonomy code when the payer or trading partner needs specialty/category information.

3. Enroll

Confirm the payer accepts that provider under the relevant TIN, address, role, taxonomy, and service context.
